In the meantime, re looking for places to visit, have you read Anita Heiss' recent online article on seeing Sydney in two days? Definitely worth a read...

I didn't even think of the non-CBD location problem, Fiona! That's so true! That really irks me as well.

I get that there are some relationships already fostered with whatever bookstores - bookstores that may and often are no where near the city - but still...

I don't think blogs are dead yet, but there will inevitably be changes in the future. I do think you have to have your fingers in lots of pies at the same time though - so for instance be on Twitter and Facebook and Tumblr or at least some combination of a couple of those platforms at least.

Google Reader is a godsend. I am still on blogger but I much prefer to use Google Reader to keep up with new posts etc.

This whole thing is a load of twaddle. The process of being a writer is not like being on a coporate ladder and you have a sure career progression. The fact is that writing and publishing are an inexact science. There is now way of knowing what will break out and what won't. All that matters is the quality of the book, not the rate at which you churn it out. The writers who do produce books on a marketing schedule suffer for it. I've followed a lot of series and at some point they jump the shark, it begins to feel too slick and I drop off.

I would never seek to produce a book a year. I will write what I believe in and say what has meaning with it. And it will take as long as it takes. Thankfully the publishing industry in Australia supports this.

Yeah, its really strange at times how many events international authors are doing when they come for one 'big' event. I'm having the same problem with Eoin Colfer's 'tour of Australia'. Not much of a tour when its one event in Victoria not even in the CBD and definitely out of the way to get to (and one in Tasmania).
